Material

Despite having a portrait of a young Victoria on the reverse of this coin, it was never designed or used as legal tender. Instead, this was what was called a "token" and it was used a counter in the game of whist (a popular card game a bit like bridge etc) and made of base metals - until we cast her into gold and silver.

This was one of the first gambling tokens (likely 1830s) to depict a woman and likely designed by Thomas Kettle (Who was the son Henry Kettle, of a buckle and button maker of Birmingham who became a producer of these type of tokens). The woman is seen seated in her puff sleeves and long draped skirt at the card table. Just look at her - sitting beautifully upright in her big skirts, the curls hanging down in front of her ears, and the detailing in the cards and counters she is holding (and on the table).

’Keep Your Temper’ runs around the coin and was a reminder to those playing to abide by the rules and not allow their emotions to take over. The reverse features a lovely portrait of a youthful Queen Victoria (likely a portrait from her late teens - and the hair is still so detailed and beautiful) and the phrase "Victoria Regina" - the ruler.

Available in both 9ct Gold and Silver - we have had a small jump ring attached before we made the cast and then the pendant hangs freely from a soldered jump ring - 6mm on the gold and 7mm on the silver - this can be made different - just let us know (extra charges may apply for significantly more metal etc).

In the Sterling Silver option - you can also order this with or without a chain - chains are brand new sterling silver curb chains in two lengths - 45cm or 50cm.

In ordering one of these, please allow 3 weeks to have this ready for posting. Also please know that the silver ones will come in the high polished variety, but the patina that you see on some of the pendants will build over time.

FAQ

Sizing

What do we mean when we say a ring is "sizeable"? Well, most standard rings can be made bigger or smaller by up to three letter sizes. If we say the item is "moderately sizeable", this usually means about 1 size, and if we say it is "not sizeable" or that "sizing is not recommended" it will be due to the construction - it could be age related, pattern related, have enamel etc.

We can happily help with sizing of rings, so please do get it touch if we can give you a quote.

As well as Afterpay and Paypal Pay-in-4 which are available at checkout, we also do traditional lay-by.

Valuations

Some of our items come with valuations we either got with the piece, or that we have had done by an independent gemologist.
