Some Roman Goddesses were there not to represent tangible skills, ideas and traits, but instead to personify thoughts and ideas. Aeternitas and Providentia were Roman goddesses who personified eternity and foresight. Why you ask are we discussing two goddesses, when there is clearly just one on this coin? Well, we are glad you asked. There has been a lot of debate about whether the reverse of this 141-161AD coin of Faustina had Aeternitas or Providentia on it. With the word Aeternitas on this coin, we see it as a symbol of permanence and the Emperor's eternal love. With a globe in her hand and the veil wrapping around her, Providentia is the goddess who could provide for all. We personally love the idea that this pendant is a bit of both, a goddess who represents the eternal heart and a woman who had the ability to not only foresee, but make provision for the future. As women, at the centre of our families worlds and catering to the provision of all, she seems like an amazing depiction of the goddess we all aspire to be.

Your pendant was made from an original silver denarius, featuring the Goddess Aeternitas or Providentia. On the coin it has "AETER" "NITAS" in split writing around the figure who is holding the globe in her right hand and her veil in her left as it cascades from her head.

The back of the pendant features an upside down portrait of Faustina the elder. This was made in the memory of Faustina Senior by her still grieving husband, Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, one of the Five Good Emperors. Part of the third coinage, this was cast in silver at some point between 141AD and 161AD (at least 1863 years ago!) You can still clearly see the braids in her bun and the wording "DIVA" on the left and "FAUSTINA" on the right.

Each pendant has a hand made, individual bail - so no two are the same - you can see in the pictures that they are slightly different widths and profiles. Should you wish a different bail - please get in touch.

FAQ

Sizing

What do we mean when we say a ring is "sizeable"? Well, most standard rings can be made bigger or smaller by up to three letter sizes. If we say the item is "moderately sizeable", this usually means about 1 size, and if we say it is "not sizeable" or that "sizing is not recommended" it will be due to the construction - it could be age related, pattern related, have enamel etc.

We can happily help with sizing of rings, so please do get it touch if we can give you a quote.
