These bridges style rings were at their most popular in late Victorian and early Edwardian times (think 1860s to 1910ish). This amazing Early Australian Bridges Ring was made during that time period and is glorious in every way shape and form. The hallmarks tell us this piece was made in the state of Victoria - and at some point after 1889 - as it has a very early example of the Victorian Guarantee mark for 18ct gold - the ship. Unfortunately, although we have scoured our books there is no symbol like that. So do you see a shield? a skull and cross bones? or cross swords?
Turquoise was really popular in Victorian times - in large part because Queen Victoria was a fan and that set a trend. It was also said to bring good fortune, luck and victory - which always helps.
The 5 turquoise cabochons are fabulous - two are more green - and one has a really lovely darker streak. All are claw set - and secure - one of the small edges ones appeared to have also been glued for added safety - you can only see this under a loupe and our jeweller advised leaving it as it is.
The fabulous side profile is what makes this ring a "bridges" style ring. Said to be named as such after the bridges in Victorian times this one is exquisite in its hand carved swirls of glorious buttery gold. The colour combination of this ring is just spectacular and given its age it is a lovely chunky example (even greater plus it is in a rarer large size) and it has not been worn against other rings.

Condition - given its age - it is in good condition - stones are secure - but it is not advised that this is worn to do all your tasks - this is a ring to be worn - but not for all the cooking cleaning etc - treat it as the 100+ year old beauty that it is.
Care - As a general rule - jewellery should not be worn for strenuous tasks that may put pressure, chemicals and weight on them (think cleaning, gym, carrying things). Jewellery should be checked every six months by a jeweller to check for wear.

FAQ
Sizing
What do we mean when we say a ring is "sizeable"? Well, most standard rings can be made bigger or smaller by up to three letter sizes. If we say the item is "moderately sizeable", this usually means about 1 size, and if we say it is "not sizeable" or that "sizing is not recommended" it will be due to the construction - it could be age related, pattern related, have enamel etc.
We can happily help with sizing of rings, so please do get it touch if we can give you a quote.
