Made by HG Rogers of Adelaide in the 1920s or 1930s, this amazing Old Cut solitaire is a fabulous piece of Australian history - and given how little is written about this company - we are so thrilled to have a piece of their craftsmanship. Also, because we love a challenge, we gathered as much information as we could and wrote a blog about Harold Rogers and his jeweller company.

Started in 1911 in Grote Street, Adelaide, Harold G Rogers quickly established himself as a prominent jeweller with two further premises opening by 1929.

We were also really pleased to find a reference to the man Harold Rogers himself. A photo of King William Street in 1918 references the sole car on the street as belonging to Rogers. The expansion to three locations and his ownership of a car, shows just what a businessman he was. However, Anne Schofield’s “Australian Jewellery 19th and Early 20th Century” makes no mention of him, and there are very few resources that do (but this was the plight of so many jewellers of the time and we are so glad we are able to get some information gathered). Our trusty Cavill, Cocks, & Grace “Australian Jewellers” does and based on the craftsmanship of the ring we have found we are not surprised he was doing as well as he was.

This old cut solitaire is everything we love in old cuts. This beauty is very nearly round, and with that central open culet we are reminded of the work that was put in by hand with machinery to meticulously polish every facet. Those less familiar with old cuts will wonder what the open culet is about. Well, they are a beautiful marker of those older stones, where they did not have the precision tools to get a pointed set of facets meeting in the middle of the base of the stone, so they flat polished it. What we are left with is that amazing little dot, that harks to this amazing era.  Set in a hexagonal white gold topped setting, the claws are protected and there is still evidence of the milgrain detail, showing just how well preserved this piece has been in its nearly 100 years of age. Set on an 18ct yellow gold hand carved basket and band, this solitaire is a stunning example of the use of white gold to bring out the whites in the diamond and the richness of the gold to sing in the sunshine.

FAQ

Sizing

What do we mean when we say a ring is "sizeable"? Well, most standard rings can be made bigger or smaller by up to three letter sizes. If we say the item is "moderately sizeable", this usually means about 1 size, and if we say it is "not sizeable" or that "sizing is not recommended" it will be due to the construction - it could be age related, pattern related, have enamel etc.

We can happily help with sizing of rings, so please do get it touch if we can give you a quote.

Lay-by

As well as Afterpay and Paypal Pay-in-4 which are available at checkout, we also do traditional lay-by.

So, if you love this piece but can't afford it right now - please get in touch.

To secure your item, we require a 20% non-refundable deposit. Items will not be removed from the website until this is paid.

Following this, you will need to make further monthly payments of 20% until the full balance is complete, a time frame of 5 months in total.

Invoices will be issued at the start of each month and we ask they are paid before the start of the following month.

We issue all invoices through the website, and it accepts all cards, Shop Pal, Paypal and Afterpay as payment.

Valuations

Some of our items come with valuations we either got with the piece, or that we have had done by an independent gemologist. We do not get valuations done on all pieces as we like to keep things as affordable as possible. However, we use a number of instruments to help us determine stones and list these details in the description of each piece.
