This amazing bracelet features Australian threepence and sixpence pieces from 1938-1944. Each coin has been rounded and then joined with rudimentary jump rings. The clasp has also been fashioned from the coins - and all of this suggests that if not made at war, that this was a handcrafted sweetheart bracelet made soon after.

Sixpences have found their way into bracelets because of the old rhyme "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe". Seen to be lucky and a very appropriate sweetheart gift for the girl you intended to marry.

Australian sixpence (and threepence) pieces of the time were made of 92.5% silver - which also helped that link to the old rhyme.

We adore the history and romance of the bracelet and the rudimentary craftsmanship is charming. Perhaps family members were engaged over the war and this is a way to honour them and the family history. Trench Art has become collectable - and it is no wonder when you get to see the ingenuity of the men - trapped away from loved ones - using what they had to create tokens of love for those back home.

Particulars:

Length 17.5cm or just under 7 inches

Weight 19.38g

Width at the widest 19mm - curve profile is approx 3mm proud

Hallmarks - none - Australian coins of this Era were 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper

Condition - this is a vintage coin bracelet - with build up of tarnish and patina particularly around the edges.
