Most famed right now for the signet ring Prince Charles wore for almost 50 years - officially called the heraldic badge of the Duke of Cornwall and heir apparent. That set of feathers had a motto, "I serve" and was used as the Prince of Wales emblem since the 14th Century with the Black Prince starting the tradition. The Welsh Rugby Union also famously uses the three feathers - and has done so (on and off) since 1881.

The use of the feathers to represent Wales is controversial. It was not a Welsh traditional symbol, it came instead from England (and maybe even France - said to be styled upon the Fleur-de-lis). Ostriches are definitely not a native species to Wales. So whilst some see it as a sign of oppression - others have taken this symbol as a part of Wales' rich history.

This particular ring was made in England (said oppressive nation) and hand engraved with the Welsh feathers. It does not bear the crown or the motto, so we feel it is more symbolic of the country than the monarchy.

Particulars:

Size Q or just over 8 (sizeable)

Weight 2.45g

Width 8.75 x 9.45mm x 1mm proud on a tapering half round shank of 2.45 x 0.65mm

Hallmarks - fully hallmarked for 9ct gold, London, 1984

Condition - hand carved Welsh feathers, surface scratches to the metal - see macro photos.

Care - As a general rule - jewellery should not be worn for strenuous tasks that may put pressure, chemicals and weight on them (think cleaning, gym, swimming/spa, carrying things).
